Rosary Parts

Postby Synne » Mon Jan 15, 2001 6:09 am

I need help...

I'm making a rosary for my friend who's getting married... I've never made a rosary before and don't know much about rosary components or where do get them... what the symbols mean all that much...

I made a 15 decade rosary <from what I've figured out from looking online> its rose quartz, garnet, garnet color swaravski crystal w/sterling silver bead caps and I think its VERY pretty :-)

BUT... I can't decide on a center piece and a cross and aside from searching online, I don't really know where to get them or what specifically to look for...

Anyone know any good stores I can look in for these pieces in manhattan/bklyn or queens? or a good website to order from?

thanks!

Hmmm, I have to get the dust out of that half of the brain to think about this.

I guess I could also just go look it up on some church web site, but I'll try to remember as much as I can.

The rosary is used as a counter for prayers, and each bead is associated with a specific prayer.

I think you start with the cross and say an "Our Father". Then I think there 3 beads connected to that, for "Hail Mary's". Then I think there's another bead for a ummmmm...."Glory Be" or something. That's about all that should be on the extension part.

The main ring should have 5 decades of beads, each decade separated with I think one or two beads. The way it works is that you go around the beads, and say a prayer while on each one. I think you do an "Our Father" on the single bead, then 10 "Mary's", and repeat 5 times.

There may be another bead here and there, but that's pretty much the main structure.

One strange thing. For REAL (obsessed) Catholics, you can't just "make" a rosary. It has to be approved by the special voodoo people, and probably also has to be "blessed". It might be sacriligious to use it otherwise.

And that makes perfect sense. God doesn't let you pray to him unless you follow the rules :)

Yeah well... me and God are >like THIS<
We have an understanding... I let him do his thing... and he lets me do my thing...

I asked a former nun friend of my mom's... she said its okay for anyone to make a rosary... I think I can get it blessed by a priest before I give it to her...

Former nun friend said I did it right... 10 little beads, big bead, 10 little beads, big bead, 10 little beads, big bead, 10 little beads... the center piece to join that strand together and then a big bead, 10 little beads, another big bead and a cross on that extra piece hanging down...

OY

I still need the center piece and the cross though... thats my main question... anyone know a good place to get them?

Sucky part is... I just got off the phone with my insane friend who's entire family (including me) is trying to get her to call off the wedding... but thats another story entirely... (rolling eyes)

Nighbird,

I looked them up online and I think you only get the catalog if you are a member or something...

I would love that info too since I need to purchase the medallions that link the rosary together.

As for how to say the rosary...I can't remember if the Glory Be or the Our Father is said at the cross, but following that it is 1 OF/Our Father, 3 HM/Hail Mary, 1 OF, Glory Be, 10 HM, 1 OF, 10 HM, 1 OF, 10 HM, 1 OF, 10 HM, 1 OF, 10 HM, Glory Be, 1 OF, 3 HM, 1 OF, and then whatever you say at the cross again. (I'm pretty sure it's the Glory Be though.)

It is not necessary to have it blessed, but many prefer that.

Also, each decade of the rosary is dedicated to something (Kinda like the stations of the cross) but I can't remember what they are right now. And, if you say the whole thing 9 times, you've said a novena.

~pant, pant, pant~ I'm out of breath after that mouthful.

I finished the rosary! I gave it to my friend as part of her wedding gift and she loved it! Not bad for a pagan jew girl!

I brought it to work and a few coworkers want to BUY rosaries from me now!

Is there an easy way for me to put up a picture of it on here? I want to show off! I was really happy with the way it came out.

Synne, you have any idea where I can get the medallion part that joins the cross part to the rest of the rosary?

Feisty,

I went insane looking in some bead stores I go to but they didnt have any silver ones... I ended up getting a pewter rose connector piece with a loop on the top and the bottom and I thin it worked nicely...

I found a bunch of websites that sell them too... but I waited so long to get it and I didn't have time to order it that way...

I dont have any experience ordering from this site but they have GORGEOUS stuff and rosary sets (cross/center) they also have the rose I used but with 3 loops... If I end up selling them, I would definately get stuff from there... its the nicest Ive found.

that explains it then...

I can tell you how many loops there are on an ankh, how many points on a pentagram... hell, I can even tell you how many points on a Jewish star!

You know, I don't know whether or not it's good publicity, but in all seriousness, I'm sure he'd love one if you get the chance to meet him.

Don't tell him your name is Synne though.

I kind of "met" him... well... actually... I SAW him... he made rounds with a huge entourage of big shots from my agency... the whole group parked themselves right outside the office I was working in that afternoon when I desperately needed to get back to my classroom for other paperwork I needed... he spoke to some of the kids and the sister in charge of public relations made an anouncement when he left that he was very impressed with the kids, staff and the program... it seemed like a nice visit... I hope he gets us some more funding though

... could you imagine? "Nice to meet you cardinal (or whatever the appropriate title is for a greeting), my name is Synne"
