Purebreds or mongrels

Postby grumpyoldman » Tue Sep 03, 2002 9:40 am

Which kind of dog do you think is smarter? A purebred? A mongrel? Or does it really matter? My favorite dog that I had was an American Staffordshire Terrier otherwise known as an american pit bull. She had to have been the smartest dog I have ever owned.

I have owned both purebreds and mutts. I don't think that you can say that all purebreds are smarter than all mutts or vice versa. One of the mutts we owned was the smartest dog I have ever known. I have had better luck with the mutts in temperment. And since I have 4 children, that is a very important factor for me.

Yeah, I agree. All of that inbreeding really takes away from the quality of future generations.

Oh wait... this is the pets forum? Ummm, nevermind.

Smartest dog I ever had was a purebred, but I really don't think purebred vs. mutt holds any more water with dogs than it does with humans.

Unfortunately, inbreeding is a HUGE problem. One of the women I work with had her Chow attack her and her b/f. She had over 100 stitches. It was from inbreeding. Inbreeding, as I am sure we all know, is taking the sister and mating it with the brother, taking the father mating it with the sister, mother to son...etc. What this does do is cause severe brain malfunctions. People do it to get that certain "line", the perfect "breed". NOW, I dont believe all purebreds are bad at all!!! Most that I have seen are wonderful, loving animals. BUT, in my opinion only, the mutts are the best, and usually the smarter of the two and have much better temperaments.

Me too Loven!! I have 3 dogs and their all mutts and I love em. Two came from the dog pound and one was a stray that showed up and we adopted him. The way I look at it, when I have a mutt, I have a truly unique dog, cause who knows what went into his making??
