If you are meaning from the standpoint of dealing with such an assault from outerspace with present real technology, I think our best bet (assuming we got some amount of warning of their arrival...) would be to re-aim the ICBMs that have spent so long targeted to the cities of Earth and pray that there was some way to target accurately to hit the size of ship they were using.

Or if you mean using a sci-fi technology, the limit is nothing more than your imagination! Send out our own ships! Laser cannons...you name it!

There is always that hyperspace by-pass trick.

That movie terrifies me! Everytime I've seen it, someone in my family dies and I found out after the movie. Needless to say I don't watch that anymore. (((SHUDDER)))

Hmmm...I can see how that would cause some concern for you. But just imagine when the original radio broadcast was aired. There were people in near-riot. Even though the show stated that it was a dramatic presentation, millions of people thought the program was a NEWS broadcast! Orson Wells had done such a wonderful job of making it seem 'real' that he was too sucessful!

Funny thing about it all is, today's movie special effects are so realistic that I can almost imagine that if the martians (klingons, breen, sith, borg, taelons...whoever) really DID ever come and attack the Earth, people would stand around with stupid smiles on their faces wondering where the cameras were and if they would be paid for being an "extra."
